Augusta Locally Grown: THE ON-LINE MARKET IS OPEN AT AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN!N
MANY THANKS:
Grateful for rain this week; grateful for sunshine too. What a glorious combo when the balance is right. I’m also grateful to all the folks who pitched in to steer the ALG ship, making my vacation a true get-away. Hugs hugs hugs to each and every one of you. And now … back to work!
UPCOMING:
SUN, MAY 31 – FAMILY FARM DAY – Come meet your farmers at Clyde’s Fresh Produce in Grovetown. Show up anytime between 2pm-6pm to see the goings on at this bio-diverse local farm. Tasty seasonal samples, beekeeping, and young farm animals make it all the more fun. This is a free event, and family friendly. Wear closed toe shoes! Use this address to get there: 5301 Meadowlark Lane, Grovetown, GA. (Please note: this address is corrected from last week’s announcement.)
MON, JUNE I – RAINWATER WORKSHOP FOR URBAN VEGGIE GARDENS – Join us for another “pop up” food-growing workshop. This one will be held at Bottle Tree Farm in Augusta. Instructors Candace & Nate Zukas will share the nitty gritty details of their own rain barrel system, which waters their beautiful urban farmette. 5:30pm-7pm. $5/person. Email kim@augustlocallygrown.org for last-minute tickets.
TUE, JUN 2 – FRUIT & VEGGIE RX KICK-OFF – Augusta Locally Grown is truly honored to be a partner in the Fruit & Veggie Rx pilot project, a first-ever for the Southeast! The pilot will be hosted and coordinated by the Harrisburg Family Healthcare clinic, funded and designed by Wholesome Wave Georgia, educationally enhanced by Icebox Ministries, academically enhanced by Emory University, held together by Good Neighbor Ministries/St. Luke UMC, and made real by medical student volunteers from MCG. Augusta Locally Grown is the project’s cheerleader and fiscal agent. June 2 is the project’s kick-off date! Your donations to the FVRx program would be very much appreciated.
SAT-SUN, JUN 6-7 – GROW HARRISBURG WORK DAYS – Throw on some old clothes, dig out your work gloves and get messy. We’re restoring a greenhouse, making a teaching kitchen for the FVRx program, and so much more at the Icebox Ministries campus in Harrisburg. A great way to get those summer service hours in! Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

Happy Thursday evening, little local market of love customers!! Can you believe it’s Thursday, and time to open the market up for the week, again? And now, with the passing of the Memorial Day weekend AND the ending of my weekend away at the annual Jubilee music festival, it’s time to get down to the business of the upcoming summer season!!
YES!!! Summer Of Love…Let The Good Times Roll!! It’s the time of year that is my favorite!! The days grow sunny, bright, hot, long. The old familiar feeling begins to creep in that was part of my youth. The carefree, throw caution to the wind, see what each day brings kind of mood!!
My music festival was most fun!! It let me relax, regroup, rejuv, and get my dancing vibe on. I feel like a new person, again, ready to take on the months of physical market season, festivals, events, and this never ending love for the little local market of love.
This market is amazing, easy to use, cost effective, packed with local goodness, and ready to help you with all of your needs!
We are also very seasonal…so, if you want to order live herbs and plants, you need to do so, pronto!! Same with seasonal asparagus, green onions, and all of the other seasonal items that will be coming our way!! Get them, savor them, and enjoy them while we can!!
It’s also the official time for grilling season!! Look at our local meat selections to make your dinners easy, grilled to perfection, and making your life easy! What about fish? A great grilling idea for those hot and hazy evenings.
We have it all to get you through the week!! Herbs, vegetables, meats, cheeses, dairy, breads, baked goods, syrups, jams and jellies, eggs…so much to get your summer groove on!!
Look to us for your Summer Of Love goodness!! We are here for you…we want to make your summer as pleasant, stress free, and packed with local goodness as we can!!
And, to make it even more fun?? I am bringing back the fun of the Market Love CD Playlist…everyone LOVED that, last summer season. Get ready…a set list of songs and lyrics that I use, on a cd, randomly picked for a customer, each week!!
We really do offer it all!! And, we do it with so much fun!!
The market is now open, you may place your orders, and we look forward to your smiling, happy faces, each Thursday!!
Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

Market News: New Vendor
Based on the survey, the most requested new item you all wanted to see on the market was fermented foods. With that being said, I am extremely happy to welcome Tanya and Charles Sharp from Cultured Traditions of Duluth to our family of producers and farmers!
Cultured Traditions’ goal is to reintroduce people to the wonderful world of naturally fermented foods, and the marvelous health benefits they provide.
Their products are 100% raw, made using only the highest quality organic ingredients, using no whey or other starters. Their krauts are wild fermented in their own natural juices (nothing else added), and they add only purified water to their Kvass, preserving and enhancing all of their nutritional and pro-biotic goodness! They work with local farmers who practice organic growing methods without being formally certified.
They will be currently offering the co-op Sauerkraut, Beet Kvass, and Jun.
Beet Kvass is a clean and refreshing health tonic with many health promoting qualities, among which many believe to be: efficient hydration (far surpassing any of the commercial ‘sports drinks’ on the market), *blood builder, *liver detoxifier & cleanser, *immune system builder, and the list goes on. * These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."
Jun is similar to Kombucha in that it uses a similar culture (or SCOBY), but instead of black tea and white sugar, Jun is made using green tea and honey, both of which are well known for their health benefits. They only the finest quality ingredients for their Jun: green tea brewed from organic loose leaf green tea and purified water, and raw local Georgia honey. Slightly sweet and a little tangy, Jun has a very pleasant and delicate flavor and aroma!
Being originally from Russia, they started with their traditional Russian
style ferment (Russian Sauerkraut, Beet Kvass,‘Soaked’ Apples). However they love to experiment, so along the way they have added many other interesting products to their line, and every few weeks something new inevitably gets produced in their commercial kitchen in Duluth.
Please join me in welcoming them to the co-op!

Fermented Cod Liver Oil Info Details
GREEN PASTURE INFO:
Here’s some information about Fermented Cod Liver Oil and its health benefits:
Why choose Green Pasture Products?
•Whole Food Form
•Wild, as Provided by Nature
•Natural fatty acid complex, nothing removed or changed
•Full, deep range of Vitamins A, D, E, K; CoQ enzymes; and other Quinones
•Non-industrialized & Historical Processing Methods
•Clean, Pure, and Extensive Third Party Tested (NO PCBs, Lead, Mercury, Arsenic or other Heavy Metals)

Why is FCLO better than regular fish oil? •Green Pasture uses wild caught cod in and around the Arctic region (A substantial amount of today’s cod liver oil is produced from farmed fish)
•FCLO higher in nutrients than regular fish oil
•Double the amounts of vitamin A and D as regular cod liver oil
•Goes rancid less quickly
•No synthetic vitamins added
•Most salmon oil has one-fifth the potency of cod liver oil
•1/2 TBS of FCLO provides the amount of elongated omega-3 fatty acids found in twelve 1,000 mg fish oil capsules
What are the benefits of Fermented Cod Liver Oil?
•Rich in Vitamins A & D which are crucial nutrients that are lacking in most modern diets
•Vitamin A- vital for a healthy immune system and healthy vision and is important for proper development in children
•Vitamin D- improves insulin function, protective effect against multiple sclerosis,
•May help prevent flu (lack of vitamin D synthesis during the winter as one explanation for high rates of influenza infection during cold season)
•In women, higher levels of vitamin D from cod liver oil improve bone mineral density
•EPA- Eicosapentaenoic acid (Omega 3 Fatty Acid) anti-inflammatory and necessary for prostaglandin production
•DHA -docasahexaenoic acid, a nutrient absolutely vital for a healthy brain and nervous system
•Fights inflammation associated with heart disease and heals the lining of the arteries
•Reduces the size of atheromas clogging arteries and improves blood vessel function
•Studies have shown cod liver oil can protect against diseases like cancer and leukemia
•Effective in treating arthritis
•Helps maintain soft skin and minimize wrinkles
How does it benefit my child’s health?
From conception through adolescence, cod liver oil can provide developing children with what they need to thrive. Mothers who take cod liver oil during pregnancy and nursing protect their children from disease while providing them with important nutrients and fatty acids. For growing children, cod liver oil is important for healthy bones and teeth, as well as preventing common problems like ADHD. It’s also an excellent treatment for diaper rash and other skin conditions if used topically.
Synergy of Butter Oil and Cod Liver Oil
Research shows that butter oil and cod liver oil, taken together, provide complementary factors leading to proper essential fatty acid balance. High-vitamin butter oil contains arachidonic acid (AA), an omega-6 fatty acid, while cod liver oil is rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3. Moreover, the saturated fatty acids in the butter oil promote efficient utilization of the unsaturated fatty acids in the cod liver oil. Finally, butter oil contains a broad and deep range of important quinones including Vitamin K, E and CoQ enzymes while cod liver oil is rich in Vitamin A and D.
Green Pasture’s High-Vitamin Butter Oil is extracted from dairy milk produced by Guernsey and Devon cows (high butterfat producers) that graze exclusively on irrigated grass in the northern Great Plains. This specific combination of climate and irrigation produces a rapidly growing specialized forage, ensuring optimal levels of Activator X as discovered by Dr. Price. Activator X and other nutrients are then further concentrated by putting the butterfat through a specialized low-temperature centrifuge process
Here is a link to an article about the benefit of cod liver oil and why it’s best taken with a high vitamin butter oil http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil .
I’ve been taking FLCO since October 2011 and I can honestly say that I have seen an improvement in my own health. My hair and nails are stronger than they’ve ever been. My hair hasn’t been this thick since my last pregnancy 6 years ago. My skin feels and looks better. I usually have small bumps on my upper arms and they have virtually disappeared. My hormone level seems more even and no mood swings. One member told me her vision has improved since taking FCLO. My son thinks it’s helped him learn how to read! He loves it and actually requests it. My daughter, on the other hand, takes it only because she knows it’s good for her.
I have heard and seen several testimonies about FCLO increasing HDL (the good cholesterol) and have experienced it myself. My doctor has been tracking my HDL (and LDL) for the past 5 years and noticed that my HDL has been going up since 2011. The only significant dietary change I have made is adding FCLO to my diet. One of my closest friends has been taking the infused coconut oil that includes fclo and skate oils. Her HDL skyrocketed almost 50 points and her LDL lowered. Ironically we have the same doctor and she is now very interested in Fermented Cod Liver Oil.
Last year, my dentist told me I had a small “soft spot” on one of my molars that he wanted to keep an eye on. I doubled up on my fish oil and at my next visit he said it was no longer there! I have been told by others that using this product can help re-mineralize your teeth and reverse tooth decay and now I believe it.
My neighbor just started taking FCLO recently. She is also a breast cancer survivor for almost 14 years but has suffered from lymphedema (swelling in arms and hands). She told me shortly after taking fermented cod liver oil blend gel she has seen a significant reduction in her swelling and sense of well being she hasn’t felt in years!
If you have a testimony you’d like to share, please email me. I’d love to know how others in our co-op have seen the benefits of taking this wonderful product!
Nora’s recommendations:
I have personally tried every flavor and type of FCLO that Green Pasture carries. There are 2 that my entire family takes and we switch it up for variety- FCLO/HVBO Blend Gel- Cinnamon Tingle Flavor and Infused Coconut Oil- Carob Banana flavor.
I recommend shaking up the FCLO Blend Gels then storing it in the fridge upside down. It’s easier to scoop out that way. None of the products need refrigeration but I do only for this product. The infused coconut oils tend to harden up in the fridge so I just keep it on the counter.
My family has “family fish oil time” right after dinner. We take it with a little orange juice or something acidic to cleanse our palate.
Suggested Dosage:
FCLO/HVBO Blend Gel- Adults 1 teaspoon, children 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon depending on age
Infused Coconut Oils- Adults 1 tablespoon, children 1/4 to 1/2 tablespoon depending on age.
For other FCLO products see sources below for recommended dosage.
